“To work in a garden is to relearn the most basic realities of life. Rather than an escape from the world’s problems, a garden...confronts us with those very problems. Referring to Voltaire’s famous dictum ‘We Must Cultivate our Garden,’ cultural critic Robert Pogue Harrison says, ‘Our garden is never a garden of merely private concerns into which one escapes from the real; it is that plot of soil on the earth, within the self, or amid the social collective, where the cultural, ethical, and civic virtues that save reality from its own worst impulses are cultivated...’”
— Fred Bahnson, Soil and Sacrament: A Spiritual Memoir of Food and Faith

Our service to the greater community is oriented towards the protection and care for God’s good creation, but we do not feel the need to re-invent the wheel when so many are already doing great work in and around NYS that needs our support. Therefore, we seek to come alongside activists and organizations to complement their existing initiatives. Our friends from whom we will learn and to whom we will lend support include the Columbia County Land Conservancy (Chatham NY), Columbia County Citizens Climate Lobby (Hudson, NY) The Farmscape Ecology Program at Hawthorne Valley (Ghent NY), The Institute for Mindful Agriculture (Ghent, NY), New York Interfaith Power and Light, the Sunrise Movement, The People’s Climate March, and others.

We anticipate traveling to support various projects, advocacy, and service work throughout the Hudson Valley and all the way up to Albany. We want to travel together as a worshipping community to be able to reflect on our activities in light of what we believe as persons of faith. We want to continue to be in line with our aim to be carbon neutral and no-waste. We believe means are as important as ends. So our first step as a community is to raise funds towards the purchase and conversion of a diesel 15 person passenger van to be converted to run on vegetable oil. We have a local vendor ready and prepared to provide this service but first we need to finish our fundraising.
